It has to be tested against the great body of Christian thought down the ages, and all its hidden implications (often unsuspected by the author himself) have to be brought to light...The only safety is to have a standard of plain, central Christianity ('mere Christianity' as Baxter calls it) which puts the controversies of the moment in their proper perspective. Such a standard can only be acquired from the old books. It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between." -C.S. Notice I have logged Lewis' quotes, not under "Fatherly Advice," but "Brotherly Wisdom." We might be tempted in our love affair with the new, to call Lewis' books "old books." However, what Lewis means by old books is not 20 year old books, but 2000 year old books. This quote comes from an introduction to a "book" written in the 4th Century AD.
